A Damaged Man in a Damaged Reality

Loki stood in the middle of his hotel room, examining the staff Odin had gifted to him.  The elves, his caretakers, were forging an identity for him here on Earth.  He knew they planned to get him working with children, somehow, though they hadn't mentioned any specifics, only that he was to learn to value human life.  Well, Loki wished them luck with that.  He would, somehow, render himself immune to sentiment, to the painful emotions that so often betrayed him.

He may not, for now, be able to escape the elves--a couple were always in attendance on him--but he didn't have to stay here.  Loki wondered at the All-father's gift.  Odin did nothing without a purpose, so the gift was definitely a double edged sword.  Perhaps, the All-father had decided travel would broaden Loki's mind.  Probably, there was some deeper scheme in the All-father's mind.  Still, Loki had no intention of rejecting the gift.  His curiosity and burning for knowledge wouldn't let him and...it was a magnificent gift.  It might be one of the best gifts Loki had ever received.

Loki grinned, the lively, sharp grin that was his trademark, that promised mischief and ohhhhh, so much fun!  He began twirling the staff above his head, in smooth, even circles, chanting lightly.  He would travel away, right now, go to some new universe and taste it's differences and similarities.  He wove just enough of a spell around the staff to keep him out of the dark dimensions, the realms even he wasn't insane enough to visit idly.  However, for the most part, he allowed the staff to choose a dimension randomly.  He felt the elves prepare, joining him without hesitation and without trying to confine him.  Well, their presence, really, was confinement enough, so why not?

Loki released his spell and watch the hotel room fade away to nothing.  He found himself standing on a sun soaked street that was definitely not in New York City, where Loki had started from.  He turned, grinning, smelling the salt of the nearby ocean.  Hm.  California, evidently.  How very interesting.  Grinning at his Elven escorts, Loki transformed his clothes to human garb for warm weather and began walking down the street.
