The Stars...The Stars are Fading...

When: Moving Day Plot
Who: The Doctor

What: The Doctor remembers Wilf talking about the stars going missing, planets vanishing and the universe collapsing on itself. He's staring at the night sky and there's something very wrong with it, there's something so wrong with it that a shiver runs down his spine and his hearts skip a beat.

This is wrong and the warmth that has been plaguing New York is something else all together. It's night and the stars are gone. "This is far worse than a few comatose patients gone missing." The Doctor quietly says, as he stuffs his hands into his brown coat pockets. The Earth couldn't be sitting at the edge of the universe's end where it has been moved so far apart from the stars that there's nothing but darkness with only hopes for Utopia. He can't leave his TARDIS was merged with the big haired youngin with a big gob and big ears.

It was too crowded for him and he needed air, he can also use a friend to talk to and he hopes Donna can see him under nothing but the lights from the old air base's buildings and the moon above them. If she can't see him perhaps she can hear him as he begins to whistle Don McLean's 'Vincent'.

Donna had been having a fairly good time getting to know everyone, acclimating to being human again. She had a great sense of what those things in Beauty and the Beast felt. She hadn't noticed the Doctor had left, but as soon as she did, she went to look for him.

She came out and stood next to him, "She started to softly sing the lyrics:
Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul....."

She smiled looking at the Doctor, "Don't tell me, you were the inspiration for that painting."

It was nice to get to meet with all of these new faces but The Doctor needed to get a breath of air. He turns around to see Donna come up behind him to sing the lyrics. "I don't think we would win UK's Got Talent." He offers her with a smile and he is disturbed by the lack of stars in the sky. "Is it just me or is California more smoggy than we previously expected?" This is more disturbing than the advertisements for the Pompeii exhibit in Times Square along with the exhibit itself. The Doctor didn't need the reminders.

He really hopes this is the case but he noticed it before their departure from New York as an owl. "No, I haven't met old Vincent. We'll have to visit him one day." It will have to wait for another man with another face to do that. Still they may get to see him sooner than he should. "I was the inspiration for many Roman statues though."

"It seems ever since Gallifrey was expelled from this universe something went terribly wrong."

Donna nudged him with her shoulder, but smiled warmly. At his prompting, she looked up, "What you mean that we can't see the stars?"

She paused and got a far-off look about her. She didn't hear anything else he had said but mumbled, "The stars are going out..."

She doesn't know she's said it.

He goes to dig into his pocket for his telescope and he puts it to his eye. "There's no stars in the sky. Look." The Doctor hands her the telescope so she can look through it and he considers for a bit. "Maybe we should start asking some questions."

He didn't catch what Donna said to him but he wants to start sticking his nose into things. "I'm sure there's people wandering the beach at night or maybe we can head to the seafood bar down the road. I'd love a good plate of old fish and chips." His mind seems to somehow function better when he jabbed a fork into some oily potatoes.

Donna frowned as the telescope was handed to her, "What? Oh..." She looked through it and gasped, "Doctor!"

She nearly dropped the telescope trying to hand it back to him, "Doctor! That's what she said!"

He's looking at the stars and he then listens to Donna when she tells him. This universe is strange it's very strange and he takes the telescope from Donna. "Who said what now?" He takes the telescope to look into it and he stares back at the sky. "I know every star's name in the sky, well I should if I could just see them."

"I remember traveling to the very end of the universe. At the end the stars have spread so far nobody could see them. That and most if not all simply burnt out."

"That young woman, Doctor." Donna was trying hard to remember now, "In that other - er - parallel world I was in. She said the stars were goin' out. Not that we couldn't see 'em... They were goin' out!"

"What young woman?" The Doctor asks, and he still remembers her in the parallel world. He's scared to mention Wilf so he doesn't. "If there's no stars that means there's no..." The Doctor recalls there being the sun in the sky but he wonders for a moment. "No, I don't think it's one of his little stunts."

He's going to have to find Master later to see if he's behind this one, the blond is too insane to do anything productive but the Cheetah's clever enough. "Still why don't we head into the little shop for some chips and ask questions."

Donna's trying to remember, "I don't know. She wouldn't tell me her name... I just remember... she was... blond?"

Donna's getting worried, since the Doctor seems to be, "One of who's stunts?" She looks at him, "Doctor, I don't think this is a time to think about eating."

That should show how scared Donna really is, normally she'd take a jab at how skinny he is.

He puts his hand to his chin and he looks up at the sky to think. "Blond, could be any blond and there's lots of blonds on Earth." The Doctor recalls Rose for a bit, the day he lost a companion due to his own actions and he levels his head again. "No, no it's not time to eat but maybe we could ask questions."

This is very unsettling and the fact there is still daylight doesn't help make this any easier. "Why don't we go for a walk then?" The Doctor offers Donna his hand and he was going to look at the offered 'living space' Jack offered them. He wants to see if there's anything, anything that could explain exactly what's happening here.

Donna takes his hand and starts walking with him, "I don't think it was just any blond though.... she kept... vanishing and reappearing."

Donna sighs, "I wish I could be more help, but she never told me her name."

The Doctor begins to walk away from this little 'party' or well get together to head down to the beach. "A blond that keeps vanishing and reappearing." He tries to find humor in that but there is none. It's not the same a walk down to a beach without stars to stare at and he's going to lead Donna to where he last saw a seafood stand but she's right it's not the time to eat.

He stops to look up at the endless sky of nothing but darkness from his place here. "It could of been an effect of the beetle. I know that felt real but it wasn't."

Donna sighs, "Doctor, this was... different from the Library." She stopped and tried to get him to look at her, "In the Library, I knew I was jumping in time - but there, I lived it! I saw the Titanic crash into London! The blond woman, she told me to use the lottery ticket, so I did... that was the only reason I didn't die there too."

Donna's getting frustrated, "It might have been a 'parallel world' but that one was real!"

He listens but there's somewhere in the back of his mind that he doesn't want to know. It simply hurts him too much to think about it. "Well, what was she like? She have any quirks about her other than being yellow?"

"Of course it's real, this world could be a parallel world, well it's a bit on the side of alternating." The Doctor muses, he was happy to see the Jacks and then there was the new people he's never seen before. He kept away from his future self as much as possible for now. He stops his walk on the beach and he stops to look out at the ocean. "I'm not really a fan of the beach. It reminds me of goodbyes and blonds."

Donna shrugs, "I don't know... she just... I don't know!" Donna sighs, "It's like a remember little bits, then it fades away again. More than anything I remember how horrible the whole world had become."

She smirked at him when he said that, "Say goodbye to all your companions on a beach, do ya?"

The Doctor continues to stare out at the ocean. "I'm sure one day it will come to you. Do you remember when we first met?" He had just lost Rose to Pete's World and the mention of the wayward blond is going to get more questions answered. "Did she talk in a bit of a cockney accent?"

"Only one, I just said my goodbyes when we first met." The Doctor takes hold of Donna's hand again to continue his walk along the beach. He stares at the homes that line the beach for a bit.

Donna smirked, "I couldn't forget it, why do ya think I hunted you down?" If she sounds smug, it's cause she is.

Donna bit the corner of her lower lip in thought, "Umm kinda. It sorta sounded like she had had dental work done or something."

Donna lets the Doctor take her hand. Like always, she will follow wherever he leads, "I remember. You were a right mess... and I was... awful. Still don't know why you kept saving my life after the way I treated you."

"I don't think you will Donna." The Doctor offers a kind smile as he continues down the beach. "Rose with dental work...the entire coming and going like a wayward kitten. It sounds like Rose." The Doctor's voice wavers and he feels horrible for what happened to Rose. It's a terrible burden even if she's with family now.

He becomes a bit down at the idea, Martha left under her free will and she helps him still. Rose had no choice in that matter. "Yeah, lost her to The Battle of Canary Wharf. I don't suppose you forgot a Cyberman in every house."

The Doctor was a mess, he felt guilty for it. "I was. It took me time to move on."

"I told you... I was in Spain, scuba diving... Missed the whole thing..." She pauses. Then she looked at him; a question forming. She spoke softly, "I always miss everything... why do you even bother with me?"

She thought she had put all that behind her... but obviously not.

"The Cybermen were all over. Okay, maybe not scuba diving." The Doctor gives that some thought of a scuba diving Cyberman. He shudders at the idea. "Best they don't then but you couldn't of been under water that entire time."

He's trying to figure things out, the falling stars or stars that don't exist anymore. He brings Donna up towards a couple people on the beach. "You're a friend, a good friend and well you're right. I need someone." Now it's time to get down to business about the stars.

"Allo! Lovely night we're having..." The Doctor waves with his free hand. "It's a crisp clear night with a trillion stars shining over head and one can loose themselves to the roar of the mighty ocean." The Doctor's met with a few waves from some surfers, and then there's the confusing look on one man's face. "Stars? What are stars?"

Donna looks from the Doctor to the man, "Well you know... the things up there? That twinkle? They look like someone put fairy lights through black construction paper?"

At the man's blank look, Donna turns to the Doctor and whispers, "Doctor, what's going on? Why doesn't he know what stars are?"

The scruffy blond looks at Donna like she's crazy. "Cause they're not real like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. There's nothing up there but nothing, it's all silent like. Then there's the moon."

The Doctor looks over at the man. "Yes, the big balls of burning gas that are billions and billions away from your place called Earth." The Doctor leans over towards Donna and he ums. "I wonder if he's had his hands into a little too much hash." He whispers to her and then back to the seriousness at hand. "Yes, the stars, they're real and boy on a night like tonight they twinkle."

"Oh! The stars! There's lots of them living here along the beach. Why that's Tom Hank's beach house behind us, he's not home but you know..." The blond tells them thinking these two are looking for celebrities and not the missing stars in the sky.

Donna just stares between the couple and the Doctor, "This is weird. Even for all the stuff that happens with you... This is weird. Why don't they know about suns and the universe and all? You're not telling me that in this place the Earth is the only thing in existence are you?"

She pause, "We should get back to the TARDIS, maybe she knows what's going on!"

The Doctor couldn't agree anymore with Donna and this is very strange. He looks back up at the sky. "How, can you forget the stars?" Then it hits him and he looks back at the empty house. "Come along Donna, let's go back to the TARDIS."

He's going to bring her to do a little breaking and entering. "Apollo 13! That's a fantastic movie." The Doctor will have to find a 'new' copy of that movie to see if there's anything connect dates here with the missing stars. He would rather a little sonic and entering of the Hanks compound and well it's what he'll do.

"I want to get a movie from Mr. Hank's collection first."

"Doctor! You are not going to his house! I'm sure the TARDIS has a copy in her library! Let's just go there first and check her collection." Donna's not liking this idea of his at all.

"Oh, come on now, where's your sense of fun." The Doctor teases a bit and he knows one thing. "I want to see a copy that's not in the TARDIS library. Actually, why don't we sleep on it and visit a local library." The Doctor maybe able to get some answers there and he begins to lead Donna back towards the TARDIS.

"That, or a local university." The Doctor's going to do some heavy poking during the evening. "I still wouldn't mind a few words with Mr. Hanks. I do love that foot piano in Big." The Doctor wouldn't dare breaking into a person's personal house unless it was something 'evil' and Hanks isn't exactly an evil person. "Come on, we'll have a big day ahead of us."

"Well, you know me... Temped in a library, anything you need to locate, I can find pretty quickly." She smiled and relaxed knowing they were going back to the TARDIS. The encounter with the couple spooked her and she needed something comforting and familiar.

"The question is: are you going to sleep?"

"There's not a thing you can't find. I want to find books on space well of course I know the name of every star known and unknown, let's not forget the planets." The Doctor takes Donna's hand again and he's going to see if the TARDIS can find anything.

He knows she never forgets, not ever, and for all the times he's changed she's remained the same other than the cosmetics. "I don't know.." The Doctor's not much for sleep and he may poke through the TARDIS movie collection.

Donna accepts his hand and when he says 'don't know' she faces him, "I know you're a Time Lord and all... But I also know you haven't slept right since we got back. I know you're worried about me... but I'll be okay for one night."

She's noticed he's been extra diligent with her recently, but they're safe on the TARDIS. She continued, "But I know even Time Lords need sleep, so you're gonna sleep tonight. Promise me."

"I'm not the greatest sleeper, a nap should be more than fine and I'll take a look in the TARDIS to see if she can tell me anything." The Doctor steps into the TARDIS of his. The dominant Doctor is that new face and he's still not used to being without his coral desktop theme. He's going to have to change that for just a little bit.

"Alright, I'll take a nap tonight, but only a short one!" The Doctor tells her.

She smirks in reply, "You'd better! Your brain goes all mushy without sleep, even if you can go longer than the rest of us."

She paused, 'But before I turn in, is there anything you need my help with?"
